Title of position: Public Health Intern

Tell us about your internship, co-op, or research opportunity, including your day-to-day responsibilities:
  • Assisted with the coordination and execution of reproductive health initiatives within the Reproductive Health Clinic, including managing the condom distribution program.
  • Contributed to community outreach efforts aimed at raising awareness about reproductive health services and resources.
  • Conducted literature reviews and data analysis to support my research project.
  • Engaged in direct patient care within the clinic, performing tasks such as recording vital signs, guiding patient check-ins and check-outs, conducting various tests, and contributing to facility upkeep and sanitation.
  • Conducted my own research project for school through the health department.

Describe the process of obtaining your position. When did you hear of the position and submit your application?

You have to apply through the Maryland Department of Health website and fill out their application and wait to hear back. I heard about this position in March, and I also applied in March. However, I heard back in May.

What resources did you use to find your current experience?

UMBC Career Center, Career Fairs, Networking events (UMBC Connects, Info Sessions, Arts With a Purpose, etc.), Alumni Networking, Student Organizations/Scholar Groups, Faculty Connections

What have you enjoyed the most about your position and organization?

I really enjoyed getting to know the Howard County Health Department and their community outreach events, which help me build more connections.

How do you believe you have made an impact through your work?
I believe I made an impact through work as I was involved in community events and planning small events for the staff, which better contributed to their day. I believe I made an impact in the community by helping out in these events. For example, we held a free STD testing day, which I helped organize.

What advice would you give to another student who is seeking an internship or similar experience?

Utilize platforms like Handshake to explore diverse internship opportunities. Apply early to maximize your chances and demonstrate enthusiasm. Attend career center events to network and gain insights into your desired industry. Keep trying until you get it, as persistence is key; remember, it only takes one 'yes' to secure a valuable internship experience.
