2008-2009 UMBC
Graduating Student Report
August 2008, December 2008 and May 2009 graduation applicants were asked by the UMBC Career Services Center to complete the 2008-2009 Graduating Student Report. The survey asked students to share their post-graduation plans as they related to graduate school and employment.
2681 graduation applicants, both graduate and undergraduate students, had the opportunity to complete the survey online during cap and gown pick-up and via several follow-up email requests. Email reminders were sent three times, and the surveys closed two months post-graduation. 967 students responded--a 36% response rate. 65% were May 2009 graduation applicants; 35% were August/December 2008 graduation applicants. 81% (786) of respondents were undergraduate students, 16% (151) were master’s students and 3% (30) were Ph.D. candidates. 89% responded to the survey prior to graduation.Employment
At the time students were surveyed, 64% of respondents reported having secured jobs (this is an increase from the 51% that reported job offers in 2007-2008). 8% of respondents were not planning to work, 4% were planning on taking time off, and an additional 24% were actively job searching at the time they completed the survey.
79% of those that secured jobs reported that their position was related to their career goals. 82% reported that their employer was in Maryland (with another 8% reporting their employer in Washington, DC or Virginia).
The industries most highly represented were Education/Academic, Health Care, Government/Public Administration, and Military & Defense/Intelligence Community.
22% of students reporting job offers worked part-time with their post-graduation employer while a UMBC student, 23% report having worked full-time with their employer, and 15% reported that they had held an internship or co-op position with their post-graduation employer.
Students were also asked to identify their top three considerations in accepting a job offer. In order, their top factors were salary, health insurance, and opportunities for advancement. Factors of least importance were and tuition reimbursement, prestige of employer, and availability of mentors.
