Every year, approximately 200 AmeriCorps members serve on one of Civic Works’ teams tutoring and mentoring children, building community parks and gardens, and rehabilitating abandoned houses for low-income residents. With only hand tools and an old, unmarked painters van, founder and CEO Vincent “Cap” Mona started the company in 1966 with a mission of quality and integrity. His big break came while on a job in downtown Washington D.C. when he returned to his vehicle, parked on Connecticut Avenue and DeSalles Street, to find a man who he thought was writing him a ticket! Low and behold, the man recognized the electrical supplies in Cap’s truck and asked him to do some wiring on his Xerox copier in a building nearby that needed to be tended to immediately. After Cap successfully completed the wiring, the salesman introduced him to building owners throughout the district… turning one job into 30, 40, and beyond… giving Mona Electric its big debut and a presence in downtown D.C. After one year, Mona Electric had grown from one employee into 10, and one truck into 8. Mona’s reputation for providing quality electrical service had customers clamoring for more. In 1970, Mona quickly added electrical construction to the fold. These small renovations led to large renovations and new construction projects blossomed into multi-million dollar projects. The early to mid 1980’s was a growth period for the Washington, DC metropolitan area in general and for the Company in particular. In the 1980’s, Mona was involved in some of the largest projects in the area. By 1988, Mona had 540 employees and was ranked 33rd in the country, followed by a ranking of 32 in 1989. As times and building codes changed, Mona Electric did too.
