Data Privacy

The Career Center (CC) of The University of Maryland, Baltimore County is committed to providing privacy of personal information for users of the Career Center. The Career Center operates computer systems that are developed and maintained by University technical staff. The Career Center also partners with external organizations for reference materials, the resume database, on-campus recruiting, job listings and credentialing services. Information regarding those partner organizations can be found below.

Information collected and maintained by the CC is for the purpose of providing comprehensive career and job search assistance to the UMBC student and alumni population. Information in the systems (UMBCworks and Handshake) may also be used to generate reports to assist with future planning and to relay progress to UMBC constituents. Handshake is a shared system of UMBC’s Career Center, and The Shriver Center.

The CC’s collection and access to students’ personal information is governed by federal policy under the Federal Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).

Handshake:

Comprehensive job listings (on-campus, part-time and full-time), resumes, on-campus recruiting, and event calendars are provided in partnership with the Handshake platform. Students’ profile data and resumes will reside on Handshake servers, and policies governing this data are covered in the Handshake Privacy Policy. For additional information, please see the Profile Privacy Options in Handshake.

Student and employer information from Handshake may be used to construct aggregate reports that assist the CC in program planning for statistical reports or to inform clients of services and programs that may be of interest.

Jobs posted on Handshake are from thousands of employers across the country. Handshake and the UMBC Career Center work very hard to review job postings to check that they are legitimate positions, but cannot guarantee against all cases of fraud. Users are urged to validate job postings and use caution and common sense when applying. The CC staff strongly advises students to not disclose social security numbers, credit card information or bank account numbers to unknown employers. The University and the CC cannot be held responsible and/or liable for any damages, real or imagined, past, present or future, from the information contained in or requested by the job postings.

UMBCworks: (Note we transitioned off this platform in the summer of 2022, and all data previously store on it will be delete after December 2023.)

Please refer to Symplicity’s Privacy Policy for details.

Vault:
The CC subscribes to Vault, an online career library, containing full text books and a collection of company and industry profiles, which supports the job search needs of our students and alumni. The CC is not responsible for content in the Vault portal.

Focus 2
The CC subscribes to Focus 2: Career and Education Planning System to help facilitate career and self-exploration. Users create their own individual accounts in the system and system based privacy information can be found on the Career Dimensions Privacy Policy. CC staff have access to a report of module completion and scores of every user for use during career counseling sessions. User information may be used to troubleshoot or construct aggregate reports. Any information shared with parties outside of the CC is only shared in aggregate form.

Interfolio:
Credentials management services are provided via a partnership between the CC and Interfolio Inc., a portfolio management specialist. Interfolio provides specific computerized online services that relate to academic portfolio and credential management such as letters of recommendation and other confidential documentation required for application to graduate or professional schools, or application to certain professional positions. Clients have control over their academic portfolio documents contained within the Interfolio service and the distribution of those documents. CC staff may access basic information about clients’ Interfolio accounts. Information gleaned from Interfolio may be used to troubleshoot or construct aggregate reports. Any information shared with parties outside of the CC is only shared in aggregate form.
